Divorce (Dissolution)
Divorce is the dissolution of the marriage-relationship
between a husband and wife. In Minnesota, a divorcing couple
is required to divide
all of their assets and liabilities including real estate, household goods, furnishings, vehicles,
retirement and investment accounts, pensions, stock options,
and profit sharing plans and any other property or debts the parties acquired throughout their marriage.
If a couple has children, the issues of custody, visitation (parenting time), child
support, day care expenses, schooling expenses and health
insurance for the children must be resolved on both on a temporary
and permanent basis.
The issue of spousal
maintenance (also known as alimony) must also be addressed,
especially in lengthy marriages where there is a great disparity
between the incomes of the parties.
Divorce can be a very difficult time for everyone involved.
That is why it is important to consult with an experienced
family law attorney who can guide you through the process
and protect your rights as a spouse and a parent. |
